Glossary
Bandwidth - A range of frequencies within a given band, in particular that used for transmitting a signal.
Binary - A numeric system that only uses two digits - 0 and 1. Computers operate in binary, meaning they store data and perform calculations using only zeroes and ones.
Bus topology- In this type of topology, all the nodes (computers as well as servers) are connected to the single cable (called bus), by the help of interface connectors.
Checksum - A digit representing the sum of the correct digits in a piece of stored or transmitted digital data, against which later comparisons can be made to detect errors in the data.
Cyclic redundancy check - A code added to data which is used to detect errors occurring during transmission, storage, or retrieval.
Globalstar - A low Earth orbit satellite constellation for satellite phone and low-speed data communications, somewhat similar to the Iridium satellite constellation and Orbcomm satellite systems baed
Hub- Central processing component of a network. It generates data from one port and transmits it to the others in the network.
Hybrid topology- Hybrid topology is an integration of two or more different topologies to form a resultant topology.
Inmarsat - A satellite communications company that provides voice and data services to the maritime, transportation and aeronautics markets as well as providing general Internet access from any location on the globe with its Broadband Global Area Network
Interface connectors- Connects a computer to a computer network
Iridium - A system of 66 active satellites used for worldwide voice and data communication from hand-held satellite phones and other transceiver units.
Network- A system that allows computers to exchange data, generally through the use of specific topologies.
Node- A device ,link or pathway. Generally a computer or computing system in a network.
Parity - An extra bit added to a byte or word to reveal errors in storage or transmission.
Redundant - Not or no longer needed or useful
Ring topology- In Ring Topology, all the nodes are connected to each-other in such a way that they make a closed loop.
Star topology- In Star topology, all the components of network are connected to the central device called “hub” which may be a hub, a router or a switch.
Thuraya -From the Arabic name Thurayya meaning Star, is an international mobile satellite services provider based in the United Arab Emirates.
Topology- Network topology is the arrangement of the various elements (links, nodes, etc.) of a computer network Essentially, it is the topological structure of a network, and may be depicted physically or logically
Wireless topology- A network architecture which employs wireless devices.
WLAN- A wireless local area network (WLAN) links two or more devices using a wireless distribution method
WMAN- A Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) is also known as a Wireless Local Loop.
WPAN- A personal area network is a computer network used for communication among computerized devices, including telephones and personal digital assistant.
